The Two Types of Bad Bosses

According to the new chapter from Research in Occupational Stress and Well-Being, titled Stress, Well-Being, and the Dark Side of Leadership, bad bosses fall into two categories, or rather two ends of the spectrum.

In this post, we will discuss what those two ends are.

It's very hard to believe, isn't it? All good people seem to have similar traits while the bad ones are bad in their own specific ways. But, the author of the chapter I pointed out above, say that however bad a boss might be, s/he falls into one of the two general categories: the Dysfunctional or the Dark.

The Dysfunctional ones are actually good guys. Unfortunate for their employees, their lack of skills, incompetency, and/or other personality defects hide all their goodness and they end up doing wrong to their employees. A good example of a Dysfunctional boss would be Michael Scott from the TV series The Office.

The Dark ones are the real bad guys. They love to see you in stress; they can get you under the truck to gain profit; they will take their employees' credit to raise themselves up; they are abusive; they are destructive. A good example of a Dark boss would be Gordon Gekko from the movie Wall Street.

Whichever kind of boss you might have, if you have a bad one, you are in trouble, if not big trouble!

In the comments, let us know which kind of boss you if. Remember one thing, a bad boss makes himself or herself look bad when s/he insults an employee.
